Departing the launch cart
Mark G. Forbes - 2007/08/30 07:56:56 UTC

In desperation as I was about to do the asphalt-grinder dance, I pushed out hard to try to pop the weaklink and at least come down on the wheels and my harness.

Sounds like a good "hands free" release attempt. Fortunately he wasn't in too much trouble, the weaklink decided...
And flew away.

Sounds like dope on a rope Forbes desperately wanted to abort the launch but his "weaklink" pilot in command had other ideas.

Odd that he doesn't say anything about going for the hook knife option.

Tragedy at 2016 Quest Air Open

Actually in aerotow competition we have standardized on a thin spectra protow bridle with a barrel release and a weaklink at the other end.

Having been at this for thirty years I've been in a position to influence that standardization.
Thirty years and you still can't manage to figure out how to stay on tow.

Lock out on tow
Ben Dunn - 2013/05/23

I went to pin of with my right hand, I was already too high, and surging upward, right after taking my hand off the bar the right wing rapidly lifted. I was happy that Joel beat me too it and gave me the rope.

Imagine if you will, just coming off the cart and center punching a thermal which takes you instantly straight up while the tug is still on the ground. Know what happens? VERY high towline forces and an over-the-top lockout. You'll have both hands on the basetube pulling it well past your knees but the glider doesn't come down and still the weaklink doesn't break (.8G). So you pull whatever release you have but the one hand still on the basetube isn't enough to hold the nose down and you pop up and over into an unplanned semi-loop. Been there, done that... at maybe 200 feet agl.
