Pro towing: 1 barrel release + weak link or 2 barrel release

I have two barrel releases and the weak link is on the opposite side that I release from. That way the weak link does not get weakened by sliding over the pin.

I don't think two barrel releases are necessary because the barrel is so simple that I can not imagine having a failure like other releases. But, in that instant when you feel out of control and you rather release with the opposite hand. Image

Nice! I just played the landing for some coworkers so they could hear the response of the crowd when you pound one in. They now understand a little better what hang gliding is all about!

I guess the hook knife is my second release? Or is that third release, with the weaklink being a second?

Scooter tow faillure... or Never Land On Your Face
Mitch the Expert Shipley - 2012/10/22 19:04:16 UTC

I know the proper bridal arrangement and missed it completely. The two pilots before PJ launched off an aerotow cart, as is my approach in 90% of my ET towing and I failed to mentally shift to the foot launch approach. His three point tow bridal (and it is three point - one on the glider taking 50%+ of tow force and one on each shoulder splitting the remaining 50%+ tow force at 25%+ a piece. Important points worth mentioning about being a 3 vs 2 point system are that tow bridal angle can significantly increase bridal tension above tow force and the two weak links - one at keel and one on shoulder - experience different tensions by a factor of two - but I digress .....)

We engage in a sport that has risk and that is part of the attraction.

Be glad you don't fly XC where I do. It really sucks here in the LA Basin and I'm tired of all the hazards.

I have to say that landing on the wheels is so much fun it's not funny.

Some people may fly because they love risks. I am not sure. In my case I fly *despite the risks*. I like to fly like a a bird, seeing beautiful landscapes from the air and meeting the challenges of staying up by understanding the weather around me, etc. This is hang gliding for me. I then try to minimize the risk and certainly wouldn't add stupid tricks that only increase it without adding anything to the flying experience.
